What is Yoga?

What is Yoga?

Yoga is often mistaken for a set of physical postures. In truth, it is a complete system for aligning the body, breath, and mind. The word yoga comes from the Sanskrit root yuj, meaning "to unite" โ€” the union of individual awareness with a calmer, clearer state of being.

At Ashu Yoga, the practice is treated as a structured framework rather than a random collection of poses. Postures (asana) build a strong, stable body; breathwork (pranayama) steadies the nervous system; and meditation cultivates focus and inner stillness. Together they support recovery, strength, flexibility, mental clarity, and lasting wellbeing.

Why a structured approach matters

Following the traditional yogic path, we first restore balance within the body and mind before progressively advancing toward specific goals โ€” whether that is weight management, healing, or peak performance. This is what allows students to feel measurable shifts in weeks, not years.
